Twitter’s CEO, Jack Dorsey, is going to be heading to Washington DC next month, to testify on Capitol Hill in front of the House Energy & Commerce Committee. The committee announced this in a Tweet, and mentioned that Dorsey will be testifying on Twitter’s algorithms and content monitoring. Dorsey isn’t the only one from Silicon Valley that will be testifying on September 5th, Google and Facebook will also have representatives there testifying before the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence, to talk about election security. Facebook’s COO, Sheryl Sandberg will be testifying, but Google’s representative hasn’t been chosen yet as the first representative was denied today by the Senate.
As of late, Silicon Valley have been heading to Washington to testify for a number of reasons, but the majority of the questions surround the elections and information. Facebook’s Mark Zuckerberg recently spent two days on Capitol Hill testifying in regards to the Cambridge Analytica scandal, where the company was able to gather a ton of information about millions of people. Google, Facebook and Twitter are all heading back to Capitol Hill to talk about Election Security, with the midterms coming up in November. This is in response to the Russians influencing the 2016 Presidential Election, which the US still hasn’t completely figured out yet.
Twitter has also had problems lately with figuring out fake news, and whether it should suspend certain accounts, like Alex Jones of InfoWars. While his account was banned on virtually every other platform, Twitter believed that he had not violated any of their rules. Finally after a few weeks, Twitter decided to suspend his account, but only for a couple of weeks. Which is likely what has gotten the attention of Congress, and has called him down to Washington, DC to testify about the content monitoring that Twitter does.
