A new survey conducted by PCMag shows that users switch mobile operating systems primarily due to better user experience, cheaper prices, and superior hardware features and design provided by other mobile platforms. The top reason that prompted consumers to switch from their previous mobile platforms to either Android or iOS is the better user experience offered by the other operating system. Around 47-percent of users who switched from Android to iOS stated that Apple’s mobile platform offered a better user experience while 30-percent of users who transferred from iOS to Android claimed that Google’s OS provided the superior user experience. Meanwhile, 29-percent of consumers who switched to Android OS stated that they changed mobile platforms due to the cheaper prices of handsets that run Google’s operating system. In comparison, only 11-percent of respondents who shifted to iOS mentioned that Apple-manufactured devices are more affordable.
Another key reason that prompt people to switch mobile platforms is the superior hardware features of the handsets that run a specific operating system, which may include a better camera or handset design. This reason is cited by 24-percent of users who transferred from Android to iOS and by 25-percent of consumers who switched to iOS from Android. Other factors that motivate consumers to transfer mobile platforms include better customer service offered by device manufacturers, the larger number of applications available, and faster software updates.
However, the survey also revealed that 71-percent of smartphone owners have never switched mobile operating systems. Out of the remaining 29-percent of consumers who have previously switched between different mobile platforms, 18-percent of users transferred from Android to iOS while 11-percent shifted from Apple’s OS to the Google-developed software. Furthermore, the survey also showed that only 19-percent of buyers consider the operating system of the device as a key factor in choosing a smartphone. In contrast, 33-percent of consumers use the price of the device as the main criterion for choosing a specific handset, while 26-percent of respondents mentioned that the brand of the device is an important factor for selecting a smartphone. Apple has a clear advantage in the latter criterion, especially since it is among the most popular brands in the United States.
