HMD Global Acquires PureView Brand From Microsoft

HMD Global has acquired the PureView brand from Microsoft on August 23, which essentially means that we may see PureView branding and technology on upcoming Nokia devices. Microsoft had received the PureView trademark way back in 2013 when the company purchased Nokia’s Devices and Services unit for $7 billion. HMD Global already manufactures Nokia-branded, Android-powered devices, as most of you probably know, and now the company looks to reunite the Nokia name with PureView branding.

PureView technology debuted way back in 2012 with the Nokia 808 Pureview, that handset sported a 41-megapixel sensor on the back, which was astounding back then. The Nokia Lumia 1020 was released in 2013 as the first Windows Phone device to sport PureView technology, and it also came with a 41-megapixel sensor, while a 1.2-megapixel camera was included on the front side of the device. The Nokia 1020 also came with a Xenon flash and Zeiss lenses, and was basically a phone to beat as far as camera performance goes back in 2013, same goes for Nokia 808 PureView in 2012, actually. Those are not the only two phones that shipped with PureView cameras, though, the Nokia Lumia 920, 925, 928, Icon, 830, 930, 1020, 1520, 950, and 950 XL also joined the ranks later on.

HMD Global will almost certainly start releasing Nokia devices with PureView branding in the future, but it remains to be seen when. The Nokia 9 is the company’s upcoming flagship, at least according to rumors, but that phone has been rumored for a long time now, and it still hasn’t become official. The Nokia 8 was announced back in September last year, so it’s possible that the company will introduce its next flagship, possibly named the Nokia 9, next month, a year after the Nokia 8’s release. The Nokia 9 probably won’t ship with PureView technology, though, as HMD Global just acquired rights to use it, so it will take the company some time to implement it in its smartphones.
