Unlocked Samsung Galaxy S9 Models Get June 2018 Security Patch

Samsung is currently distributing an update that installs the June 2018 Android security patch to the unlocked US variant of the Galaxy S9. This is the first update that the device received since it was launched three months ago. In the previous months, the unlocked variant of the Galaxy S9 sold in the United States was left considerably behind on the security front compared to its unlocked counterparts that are powered by the Exynos 9810 chipset, which have been receiving software updates in a regular manner.

The June 2018 Android security patch brings security fixes for 57 vulnerabilities discovered in the Android operating system. Among the security issues fixed in this software upgrade are five critical vulnerabilities found in the media framework and the system partition of the operating system. In addition, the South Korean device maker also incorporated into fixes for three vulnerabilities discovered in its custom Android 8.0 Oreo implementation. Two of the three software flaws are categorized as critical security issues, one of which could have been used by attackers to modify local flash storage to an unspecified degree. The new update also brings a number of bug fixes to the device, which should help improve its overall performance.

The update, which can be identified by firmware version number G960U1UES2ARF4, is currently being rolled out by the smartphone manufacturer over the air, so it will likely take several days before all devices receive the software package. Users may wait for the firmware to be installed automatically or attempt to trigger a manual download from the Settings app. Backing up your data, connecting the phone to a Wi-Fi network, and ensuring your battery is fully charged are all steps you should be taking before initializing the installation process. Aside from the unlocked Snapdragon variants of the handset, both Verizon and T-Mobile’s models of the Galaxy S9 have already received the June 2018 Android security patch.
