Samsung’s Galaxy Note 9 will be “very similar” to its direct predecessor and recent renders showing massive improvements in terms of screen-to-body ratio and other device aspects are inaccurate, according to one China-based industry insider with a positive track record regarding information related to the Seoul-based tech giant. Samsung is apparently primarily looking to refine the Galaxy Note 8’s design before potentially considering more significant changes to its flagship lineup next year, though the rear-mounted fingerprint reader found on the 2017 phablet is likely to be repositioned below the camera setup of its successor, as was the case with the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9 Plus released in mid-March.
Samsung’s mobile products have been stagnating since early 2017 in terms of design, though largely because the company adopted a don’t-fix-what-isn’t-broken strategy, with its premium handset lineups still being lauded as some of the best-looking smartphones on the market by both critics and consumers alike. The Galaxy Note 9 is hence expected to focus on internal improvements instead of visual changes, debuting with a better system-on-chip, enhanced imaging hardware, and more consistent software than its predecessor. A dual-camera setup is likely to be part of the upcoming package, though it remains to be seen whether Samsung once again opts to deliver a variable-aperture mobile lens such as the one found on the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9 Plus.
The Galaxy Note 9 is expected to be announced on August 9 at yet another “Unpacked” event taking place in New York City. The handset is hence likely to go on sale by the end of that same month, following a short pre-order period. Beyond the Android-powered phablet, Samsung is set to introduce the Gear S4 smartwatch series and Galaxy Tab S4 tablet lineup in the coming months, then shift its flagship focus to the Galaxy S10 family meant to be released in early 2019, according to recent reports.
