Samsung Galaxy Note 9 S Pen To Have “Remote Features:” Rumor

The S Pen shipping with Samsung’s Galaxy Note 9 will have some “remote features” and possibly mark the biggest generational jump in the history of the company’s mobile styluses, according to a number of new rumors that emerged on Twitter in the last 24 hours. The same source that already hinted at significant S Pen improvements over the weekend more recently asserted the gadget will have “a soul” and be a major selling point of the upcoming Android phablet. A similar sentiment was expressed by another industry insider on Twitter earlier today, alongside the claim that the Galaxy Note 9’s S Pen may be capable of functioning like a remote controller in certain scenarios.

Samsung has been improving every new generation of its stylus series ever since introducing the Galaxy Note lineup in late 2011 but was usually more focused on software upgrades which most recently came in the form of features such as Live Messages and real-time translations. The pressure sensitivity of the S Pen lineup hasn’t changed since the ill-fated Galaxy Note 7, though the upcoming gadget may finally make the jump to 8,192 pressure levels. The rumored remote features could function in a manner similar to how Microsoft’s Surface Pen operates with its Windows devices, i.e. depend on app developer support instead of operating as a universal wireless controller for any particular activity.

The Galaxy Note 9 is expected to be visually similar to its predecessor and feature internals that are largely identical to the Galaxy S9 series, though its most premium variant is rumored to debut with as much as 8GB of RAM and 512GB of flash memory expandable via a microSD card slot by up to 2TB. That high-end model likely won’t be sold globally and may only be introduced in Samsung’s home country and China, as suggested by the firm’s recently adopted product practices. Latest reports are indicative of an August 9 announcement at a New York City-based “Unpacked” event which is expected to be followed by a short pre-order period and a late August release. Samsung isn’t likely to equip the Galaxy Note 9 with an in-screen fingerprint reader or a front-facing 3D camera as it’s supposedly saving both of those novelties for the Galaxy S10 family.
