Microsoft Edge Browser Hits Five Million Android Installs

The Android version of Microsoft’s Edge browser surpassed five million installs, as revealed by its Google Play Store listing which was updated earlier this week. Since the app is pre-installed on an extremely small number of devices such as the customized versions of Samsung’s Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9 Plus, the vast majority of its installs cited by the Google Play Store likely amount to manual downloads. The internet browser itself was only officially released about half a year ago, though a Developer Preview version of the mobile tool has been available to users since mid-October.

The Android app hence accumulated some four million downloads since early December, which is when Google last updated its listing, placing its install base at one million devices. The Redmond, Washington-based tech giant has been maintaining a regular influx of Edge updates in the meantime but its efforts to promote the app remain relatively weak. The latest version of Microsoft Edge for Android debuted several days back, introducing Adblock Plus integration which allows users to prevent most online advertising from showing up in the browser, in addition to introducing an artificial intelligence-assisted visual search engine akin to Google Lens.

Edge is likely to continue receiving AI-powered features moving forward as machine learning and related technologies are moving to the forefront of Microsoft’s long-term business strategy, both in terms of R&D efforts and M&A activity. The new Android build of Edge also debuts support for Intune-managed accounts, the ability to add bookmarks to e-books and change their text spacing, as well as a number of performance improvements and bug fixes, according to the app’s official changelog. Edge hence remains a regularly updated alternative to Google’s Chrome, presently the most popular internet browsing option in the Android ecosystem and beyond. The app is compatible with approximately 99-percent of all active Android devices in the world, requiring only Android 4.4 KitKat or a later version of the mobile operating system.
