The LG V40 will feature a triple-camera setup on the back and another dual-lens system on the front, Android Police reports, citing an insider close to the South Korean handset manufacturer. The main imaging solution of the phablet will feature an ultra-wide lens and another standard camera, though the nature of the third module remains unclear. Should LG choose to follow the example set by Huawei’s P20 Pro — still the only Android device with a triple-camera setup — the third unit found on the back of its upcoming flagship may use a telephoto lens meant to improve the smartphone’s optical zoom capabilities.
While the recently released V35 ThinQ lacks the dedicated Google Assistant button found on the previously introduced G7 ThinQ, the feature will be making a return on the V40, as per the same report. Likewise, the LG V40 should feature a display notch and will most likely be yet another mobile product from the company launching as part of the ThinQ brand. LG’s AI-focused mobile photography strategy that the company started pursuing with the V30S ThinQ earlier this year is expected to once again be touted as the main selling point of the V40, though it remains to be seen how LG ends up combining the handset’s three rear cameras.
Triple-camera setups are bound to become more prevalent in the coming years as more handset makers start hitting the physical limitations of two-sensor systems, established French image benchmarking company DxOMark told AndroidHeadlines last month, adding that solutions with four and more lenses will follow soon after. Sensor and lens manufacturers are eagerly awaiting that trend as the declining global demand for smartphones is threatening to start eating into their profits in the near term. At least one member of Huawei’s Mate 20 lineup should accommodate three rear cameras as well, whereas Samsung is reportedly considering such a system for the Galaxy S10 series set to be released early next year.
