Fortnite Mobile earned approximately $100 million over its first three months on the market, according to new data collected by digital market research company Sensor Tower. The achievement is even more impressive in light of the fact that Fortnite is still only available on iOS and spent the first two weeks of its availability as an invite-only beta game. Regardless, the title generated some $25 million in revenue in its first month on Apple’s iOS App Store and another $25 million over the following two weeks. In the context of the industry as a whole, Epic Games enjoyed one of the most successful mobile launches in the history of smartphone apps, with Fortnite’s initial three-month period only being behind Supercell’s Clash of Clans and Niantic’s Pokemon Go.
Fortnite is set to be released on Android devices later this summer, presumably as a Google Play Store exclusive. The Android port of the popular battle royale title still doesn’t have a firm release date attached to it, with recent reports suggesting Epic is still in the process of figuring out the cross-play component of the game. While Sony recently caused some controversy by preventing cross-play features between its PlayStation 4 and Nintendo’s Switch, the Android version of the game should be fully compatible with the PS4 one, allowing players to carry over their progression and experience massive battles with people on other platforms.
While the Android release of the mobile game will almost certainly accelerate its revenue generation, it’s unlikely to do so by a factor of two or more; iOS gamers aren’t nearly as numerous as their colleagues using Android devices but the former group generally spends much more on in-app purchases than the latter, according to numerous industry trackers and app studies. Epic is expected to provide an update on the development of Fortnite for Android in July. The initial version of the game likely won’t support physical controllers but that feature should be introduced in the near future.
