Oculus Go owner and Reddit user CidVonHighwind recently took to the popular online service to reveal and share a GitHub project revolving around a Game Boy emulator designed for the new VR headset from Facebook’s subsidiary. Specifically, the developer created an Oculus Go port of the existing Gearboy emulator and the software is available for download to anyone who may want to experience retro Game Boy or Game Boy Color games in a virtual reality environment.
The gaming scene has grown a lot over the past few decades and what previously seemed like a vision of the distant future is now a (virtual) reality. Today, the concept of VR is more popular than it has ever been, with VR headsets such as the Oculus Rift, Oculus Go, and HTC Vive providing a visual gateway into new, simulated three-dimensional worlds. These new technological advancements also offer new ways to experience retro games in new environments, with active communities and emulators arguably keeping older titles and even abandonware alive for newer generations of hardware. VR is no exception, as various solutions for retro gaming in VR already exist for different platforms. Titles such as New Retro Arcade: Neon give players a highly detailed emulator frontend in the form of fully-rendered 3D arcade rooms, while applications such as 3DNes VR recreate 2D retro games in a 3D engine using clever algorithms. As for the Game Boy emulator at hand which was appropriately christened GearboyVR, the software might not look as intricate as the aforementioned two titles but that is to be expected seeing how this is simply a port of the Gearboy emulator for the Oculus Go. Nevertheless, the software seems to meet its simple purpose of emulating Game Boy and Game Boy Color games and showcase them on a giant flat screen in the virtual reality space.
The software will likely continue to get better with time, as the creator mentioned that further improvements, such as the addition of a “States” folder, will be included in the next version of the VR emulator.
