The Samsung Galaxy S9 is out in full force, but it looks like Samsung is gearing up to launch a variant of last year’s flagship.
The rumor mill has churned up what is being called the Samsung Galaxy S8 Lite, and as you might expect from the name, it harkens back to last year’s high-end smartphone. You will see the similar design to the Galaxy S8, and the fingerprint reader on the back is right to the side of the camera, not below it like the Galaxy S9.
Chinese regulatory entity TENAA has a listing for the device, and it indicates the smartphone will have a 5.8-inch display with a resolution of 2220×1080 and a Qualcomm Snapdragon 660 processor under the hood. There will be 4GB of RAM and 64GB of built-in storage, and Samsung is throwing in a microSD card slot for expandable storage. The filing also reveals the Galaxy S8 Lite will have Android 8.0 Oreo on board and a battery that measures in at 3000mAh.
The Galaxy S8 Lite is scheduled to launch in China on May 21. No word on any international markets beyond that just yet.
This is certainly a mid-range handset, using the frame of last year’s flagship. It’s an interesting approach to be sure, and one that will probably work quite well for Samsung. What do you think of the idea?
