Facebook is planning to add an avatars feature to its app at some point in the future according to code found within its main application on Android devices. The new feature, which is actually called Avatars, is set to give Facebook users a way to customize a cartoon likeness of themselves which can then be used inside of comments as a sticker. Users will also reportedly be able to place the Avatar stickers in chat within Messenger as well for both private and group chats. Facebook hasn’t officially announced Avatars so at the moment it’s not clear when it plans to launch it, but based on the images it seems Facebook may have the development pretty far along.
Avatars is being compared to Bitmoji, a similar-looking feature that can be found within Snapchat that also lets users create animated likenesses of themselves for use with snaps, and though there are bound to be some differences it’s hard to deny that the two look to be cut from the same cloth visually. That shouldn’t be too much of a surprise as Facebook has been recognized as bringing in features that were similar to Snapchat’s for use within its Instagram application for a while now. Facebook has also been working on 3D avatars for its Oculus VR platform so users have a way to display themselves when interacting with others for certain content, so it may have only been a matter of time before it came up with something for its main service.
According to the details the Avatars feature will let users customize various aspects of their animated representation, including customizing their hair style and color, the color of their skin, and different facial features, in an attempt to make the avatar look as much like them as possible. It wasn’t mentioned if the Avatars feature would allow other customization options above and beyond the ones listed, but even with just those few users would already have a fair amount of tweaks to make to personalize the look.
