Google Home Units Starting To Show Up Under ‘Device Activity’

Google Home units are now starting to show up as ‘recently used devices’ under the ‘Device activity’ page associated with the owner’s Google account. It is currently unclear how widespread the access to this change is, as some users are seeing the smart speaker showing up while others are not. Therefore it would seem to be the case this is still in the process of rolling out. The image shown below was provided to AndroidHeadlines by a reader highlighting the feature has now started to become available.

This is a fairly notable change as Google Home speakers are very tightly integrated with the owner’s Google account and by association this means they are very much ‘in the know’ when it comes to the owner’s account in general. After all, the very purpose of a smart speaker is to provide a user with feedback on various aspects related to their account, as well as more advanced account-related functionality, such as ordering and paying for items. This inherently means there are bound to be security concerns associated with a device like this which is where Google’s recently used devices feature comes in. As this feature allows device owners to see the last time a specific device was used, as well as where the device was last used, and if needed, the option to disable the device’s access to an account.

With Google Home units now beginning to show up on this list it is presumed Home speaker owners will be able to make use of these same features and stay more informed on the use of their speakers, as and when needed. Although, at present, in addition to seeming to have only become available to some users, the full functionality associated with this feature has not been extended to Google Home units. Instead, the listings for these devices primarily just let the owner know the last time the device was synced. There are also some cosmetic issues with the listings. For example, Google Home speakers come with a generic ‘laptop’ image attached and not an actual picture of the correct product (unlike any other recently used device) and also does not specify the exact model of the speaker – Home, Mini, Max, or otherwise. Although it probably should be expected device listings for Google Home units will increase in functionality and improve on presentation in due course, along with the widening of availability in general.
