Cricket Wireless Debuts Android-Powered LG Fortune 2 At $99

AT&T’s MVNO subsidiary Cricket Wireless is now offering the LG Fortune 2, a new Android smartphone priced at $99, the company said Friday. While the handset itself is an entry-level affair, the wireless carrier insists it delivers a variety of “premium features,” pointing to options such as its support for LG’s Knock On solution that allows you to wake up the phone with a tap on its screen and glance at notifications before putting it back to sleep with an identical gesture. Native support for app shortcuts that can be activated by long-pressing app icons on the home screen is also part of the package, as is LG’s proprietary Quick Video Editor and an integrated Smart Cleaning functionality meant to prevent the handset from getting slower over time.

Outside of those features, the LG Fortune 2 offers a 5-inch LCD panel with a display resolution of 1,280 by 720 pixels amounting to a widescreen image format of 16:9. The smartphone is equipped with a quad-core processor clocked at a maximum operating frequency of 1.4GHz and 2GB of RAM, as well as 16GB of internal flash storage expandable via a microSD card slot by up to 32GB. LG equipped its latest Android-powered offering with a 2,500mAh battery and included Bluetooth 4.2 support as well. The handset is 145 x 74 x 8mm in size, thus being a rather compact pocket companion, especially in today’s era of phablets. LG’s Fortune 2 runs Android 7.1.2 Nougat out of the box and while it may eventually be upgraded to Android 8.0 Oreo given how the South Korean tech giant usually provides its low-end devices with one major operating system jump over their lifecycles, support for Google’s Project Treble that could potentially accelerate the speed of security patches remains highly unlikely and is presumably the main reason why the new phone doesn’t run Oreo out of the box given how products updated to Oreo aren’t required to allow for Project Treble, unlike those that are released with it.

The LG Fortune 2 comes just over a year after its predecessor debuted in the United States, also exclusively on Cricket Wireless, albeit with a $10 lower price tag. The Seoul-based phone maker has yet to hold its largest product event of the spring, with the company recently confirming its next Android flagship will be announced in early May in the form of the LG G7 ThinQ.
