The program is dubbed Amazon Fuse, and with it, Amazon is planning to grow its media services globally by creating partnerships with operators in other countries. From the information that is currently available, it appears that Amazon may not be looking to introduce any new media services, but grow its current ones, including Amazon Prime Video and Amazon Music. Amazon had already done one partnership with Vodafone in India, where customers could get a discount on Amazon Prime (which included Prime Video), bringing the total to less than $8 per year. Which is a huge difference from the price in the US. That’s about the same price as Netflix in India, but with Amazon you get free two-day shipping.
Variety, who is reporting on this expansion from Amazon, has found a few different job postings for Amazon Fuse – which is where that name came from. According to the job posting, “Amazon Fuse is a newly launched product and team at Amazon. It enabled international partners to offer Amazon subscription services to their customers. This provides Amazon with expanded customer reach and international distribution.” Amazon also recently filed for a trademark for Amazon Fuse, so it is definitely a name that the company has been tossing around. Now whether or not that is the final name that the company decides to market with this new product, is another story. It could end up just being the internal name.
The report also cites sources in Amazon’s European arm that weren’t familiar with the name “Amazon Fuse” but did mention that the company has been pursuing partners in Europe pretty aggressively over the past 10 to 12 months. This is going to be a way for Amazon to get more users on its services, like Prime, without forcing customers to spend more money. It’s something that Amazon has actually done in the US with Sprint. Where Sprint was offering free Prime with the purchase of a specific phone, or a discounted monthly price for Prime. So it’s not too crazy to think that Amazon may do this in other countries to help expand its operations.
