ZTE has held a press conference in China earlier today, and during this press conference, it was confirmed that the ZTE Axon M9 flagship smartphone will be announced in September. Now, this press conference took place because ZTE Corporation wanted to announced the ZTE Intelligent Terminal Co. Ltd. (also known as ZTE Terminal China) in China, and it will basically operate independently. ZTE also noted that the newly-established ZTE Intelligent Terminal will function in both domestic and global markets, as ZTE Terminal’s CEO, Cheng Li, will be responsible for global markets, while Bai Boren will handle the domestic market.
Now, the popularity of ZTE’s smartphones decreased in China over the last couple of years, and it seems like the company is trying to change that. The ZTE Intelligent Terminal is expected to be involved in the company’s smartphone business quite a bit, and its goal will be to expand and promote ZTE’s smartphone brand in China and abroad it seems, at least to a certain level, as the company’s CEO will be focused towards other markets it seems. Now, as far as the ZTE Axon M9 is concerned, the company did not mention anything other than the fact it will arrive in China, and that it will be a flagship smartphone. Interestingly enough, ZTE will attach the ‘M’ branding to this smartphone, which may suggest this phone has something to do with the ZTE Axon M foldable smartphone which was announced a while back, even though that doesn’t make all that much sense. The ZTE Axon M was criticized for so many reasons, and it doesn’t really seem like ZTE will opt to release a flagship smartphone which is also foldable at the same time, unless the company managed to achieve a breakthrough in design or something of the sort.
It is far more likely that the ZTE Axon M9 will be a spiritual successor of the ZTE Axon 7 which was announced back in mid-2016. ZTE’s CEO, Cheng Lixin, revealed back in January that the company is planning to release the ZTE Axon 9 flagship this year, and that they will skip the ‘Axon 8’ branding, so the ZTE Axon M9 seemingly complicates things. Will ZTE introduce both the ZTE Axon 9 and Axon M9, or are the two the same phone, and the company decided to add ‘M’ branding to the ZTE Axon 9 name? Well, we’ll just have to wait until September comes knocking, or at least for additional, leaked info, to make sense of all this.
