30 Luxury Cars Crushed by the Philippine Government

Thirty luxury cars, including Mercedes-Benz units, were destroyed by the Philippine Government in order to curb the smuggling operations in the Southeast Asian country. The video here shows how the vehicles were run over by a bulldozers.

The Philippines’ Bureau of Customs is considered by many Filipinos as one of the most corrupt government agencies in their country. To show that the government is serious in combating such illegal acts, Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte personally oversaw the destruction of the smuggled luxury cars. Among the specified Mercedes units that were smashed were used 2007 S550 and used 1995 C280 cars. A 2012 Mercedes with unspecified model and an unnamed brand new Mercedes were also mentioned by the narrator in the video.

According to Philippines’ GMA News, the event coincided with the 116th anniversary of the Bureau of Customs. The destruction process was simultaneously held at the Manila Port, Cebu Port and Davao Ports of the country. Twenty luxury vehicles were crushed in Manila while three were dismantled in Cebu and seven were in Davao.

In the past, the Philippine Government would put into auction any smuggled luxury vehicles it got its hands on. This is to generate additional revenue for the government. Therefore, the event we just witnessed was a clear departure from the usual process.

Duterte ordered the destruction of the luxury government in one of his speeches earlier. He defended his stance by saying that disposing the vehicles in the auction would just offer smugglers the chance to secure them legally.
