Smart Home Weekly: Why Samsung SmartThings is the Best Smart Home Hub

When it comes to smart home products, there are a ton of different products out there, and they are all made by different companies. What this means is that you need a different app for pretty much everything. Imagine you have the Eufy Smart Plug Mini, the August Home Smart Lock Pro, and a few Philips Hue light bulbs in your home. That right there would consist of three individual apps to control those products. And as you add more, you’ll need more apps. Luckily there are some great hubs out there that you can pick up -especially if you don’t want to go all in on using just your voice with either Amazon Alexa or Google Assistant. And that’s where the Samsung SmartThings hub comes into play.

Samsung’s SmartThings platform does have a slew of its own products already, including some smart plugs, some sensors and a few other products. But what makes SmartThings unique is the fact that it works with other products from other companies. There are close to 200 different products that work with the SmartThings hub, which means most of the products you own will be compatible. Some of the bigger names include Philips Hue lights, Ring Video Doorbell Pro, the Yale Assure Lock, the ecobee4 thermostat and much more.

As if that weren’t enough, Samsung also created the SmartThings Link, for the NVIDIA SHIELD TV. This basically allows you to control everything in your home using the SHIELD TV and the Google Assistant through Android TV. Which makes things all that much easier to use. If you have a slew of smart home devices in your home, the SmartThings Link is a must-buy, especially if you have an NVIDIA SHIELD TV. And since it’s only $29, it’s hard to pass it up.

There’s another “hub” that Samsung has with SmartThings, and it’s actually a Mesh WiFi Router, which brings you better WiFi (needed in the world of the smart home), along with a SmartThings hub. Think of it as killing two birds with one stone. It’s the Samsung Connect Home Smart WiFi System Pro, and it costs $249 (although it is on sale right now for $199). That is more expensive than a standard hub, but it is about the same price as the other Mesh WiFi Routers out there from Google, NETGEAR, TP-Link and others. And you get the SmartThings Hub included, which makes this a great buy.

Basically, the bottom line with SmartThings is the fact that it makes it easier to control all of your smart home products, using a single app instead of a ton of different apps. Since there isn’t one company out there that makes all of the smart home products right now, you’re bound to need a few more apps to get things done. Luckily, platforms like SmartThings exist, to make things easier. SmartThings does work with both Alexa and Google Assistant, so you are still able to connect everything to SmartThings then use your favorite personal assistant to get things done with your voice.
