Samsung has announced a 146-inch MicroLED TV called The Wall, aptly named for its massive size and the ability to cover an entire wall with a display surface for watching and viewing all the TV content your heart can desire. Samsung is no stranger to pushing the envelope when it comes to technology, and its TVs have long been regarded some of the best in the business for not only their innovative features but their stylish design. Samsung is taking things a few steps further with The Wall, though.
The big thing behind The Wall TV, quite literally behind, are the MicroLEDs that sit behind the display panel. These tiny LEDs act as their own source of light and according to Samsung are much smaller than traditional LEDs while also getting rid of the need for backlighting and color filters, not too unlike what you would see from OLED screens that also feature smaller LEDs that emit their own light and help display blacks that are deeper than on LCD displays.
In addition to the MicroLEDs Samsung is also calling this the world’s first modular TV. While the unit that Samsung is showing off at CES this week is 146-inches in size, the way Samsung is describing it is that consumers will be able to create a TV that will fit their own personal needs or wants when it comes to screen size, meaning that it should be possible to have a TV that is smaller than 146-inches, or potentially larger thanks to the bezel-less design that Samsung has implemented. Taking this into consideration it seems like Samsung’s vision for The Wall is to have consumers be able to customize their TV viewing experience by allowing them to connect as many modules as they like until they get the size they want. At the moment Samsung has been pretty quiet on specific details about how the modules fit together, and it hasn’t set any dates for release as it has yet to commercialize The Wall, though it does plan to bring it to market at some point in the future. There’s also no word on cost, but given the new technology in use, the bezel-less design, and the size, chances are it will be pretty costly.
