Canada’s Rogers Communications has filed new trademarks with the Canadian Intellectual Property Office (CIPO) as of December 28, which are reportedly tied to the company’s push into the Internet of Things (IoT) market. That would make some sense, with consideration for what, exactly, the phrases in question are and at least some of the goods and services classifications covered by the trademark. According to the CIPO listing, accessible via the source link below, the trademarked phrases include, “Make more possible,” “Enhance your everyday,” and “Explore Beyond.”
Unfortunately, as is often the case with these kinds of listing, the classifications assigned to the phrases are relatively vague. So there isn’t really any way to know what, exactly, their intended use is. Confusing matters further, the trademarks are applicable under CIPO’s Nice Classifications for a range of technologies from “cellular phones” to “television converters,” while also being applicable to “periodical publications” and “drinking bottles for sports.” On the other hand, under services classifications, the trademarks are applicable to even more categories ranging from advertising and the build-out of websites to internet banking and home security installation services. Beyond that, Rogers may not end up using them at all. Although unlikely, the company could ultimately decide that none of the new trademarks match up with its overall goals and drop them entirely.
Having said that, if they do end up being put to use it is reasonably safe to assume that Rogers Communications plans to use the trademarks as part of its IoT campaign. Each of the phrases covered under the filing could easily be used to promote the potential benefits generated by having access to the devices that connect and interact in order to make up an IoT network. Moreover, the range of services and products covered by the trademarks seems wide enough to encompass the majority of what would be included in the IoT. These are also not the only filings by Rogers in recent months that seem linked to the company’s efforts in that segment of the technology market. The company filed for trademarks related to at least nine smart devices and software solutions in August of last year, as well, and these new listings could easily be tied in with those.
