Philips To Release Five New OLED TV Models for 2018

Prominent electronics manufacturer Philips has now announced that it will release several brand new OLED TV models for 2018 in hopes of carving out a bigger portion of the market. Unfortunately, the company hasn’t yet revealed an exact time frame or price point for the new displays, but it has said that it expects to begin shipping units during the first half of the year. The new televisions will also each fall into either the 55-inch and 65-inch class and will come with several common features built-in. Among the new improvements that the 2018 Philips OLED TVs will ship with are a new Philips-built P5 image processing engine, a quad-core processor powering Android under the hood, and a slim bezel-related feature Philips calls its three-sided Ambilight Spectra XL system. That’s on top of the inclusion of the latest advancements in HDR – with support for both HDR10 and HLG – offering a peak white output of up to 900 nits for better-than-average contrast ratios – coupled with a color gamut that is rated to cover 99-percent of DCI-P3.

The P5 engine may be the most interesting of those new features since it is effectively a series of enhancements rolled into one. For starters, like at least one other TV announced this year, it allows content to be scaled up to UHD without compromising image sharpness, contrast, or image depth. Contrast is configured at a multiple-zone level that includes a feature for dimming specific portions of the image in real time. Meanwhile, color range and reproduction is also helped thanks to the P5 engine’s 17-bit color booster and smart color processing. Finally, the P5 enables up to 4-billion pixels to be processed simultaneously to improve problems associated with motion-blurring. Not to be overlooked, the new Ambilight system is also a key selling point. For those who may not already be aware, Philips’s Ambilight works by extending ambient lighting based on the currently displayed colors to the area surrounding the TV from behind. the latest iteration of the system is combined with major reductions to screen bezels, allowing for better immersion overall. Each television also features Android M, including access to the Google Play Store’s TV-oriented apps and services, with smart remotes included for controlling the system – including voice support for Assistant.

The primary differences between the displays will be minimal, coming down to mostly size, design, and materials. First up is the OLED 973, which was debuted at IFA 2017 and is already available in various markets in Europe. The 973 is a 65-inch flagship television and has actually been awarded based on its use of aluminum, glass, and the use Kvadrat speaker cloth to cover the 6.1-channel 60W sound system built into its stand. The stand houses six front-firing drivers and can be either wall mounted or not. Meanwhile, the OLED 873 is a 65-inch platform as well, building on the 55-inch television released in 2017 which will also presumably receive an update this year. It also features an ultra-thin brushed-aluminum open frame and a cradle-like stand to give it the appearance of floating. For sound, the OLED 873 features DTS HD Premium Sound support and Philips’s triple ring speaker technology, generating more sound from a more confined space. Finally, the OLED 803 series televisions will run in both 55-inch and 65-inch models. The 803 displays will be very close to the previously mentioned 873 series but will feature a minimalist design.
