Several new renders depicting what’s said to be the Nokia 9 appeared online earlier this week, having been made by a number of independent smartphone case manufacturers. The images seen in the gallery below largely align with previous reports about HMD Global’s next Android flagship that isn’t meant to be a direct successor to the Nokia 8 but the start of an entirely new high-end series. The front of the handset is mostly covered by a screen that appears to use an 18:9 aspect ratio and curves around the long edges of the supposed Nokia 9, thus being somewhat reminiscent of the Infinity Display panels used by Samsung’s Galaxy S8 and Galaxy Note 8 lineups. The top and bottom bezels of the device are slightly larger than the ones found on Samsung’s recent flagships but the overall design of the smartphone appears to be similar from the front.
The back of the alleged Nokia 9 is much more distinguishable, with the smartphone having a dual-camera setup entailing two vertically arranged sensors centered near the top of the phablet. To the right of the imaging system is a dual-LED (dual-tone) flash unit and all of the leaked cases also contain a small circular opening to its left, though it’s presently unclear whether the cutout was designed for a heart rate monitor or a different sensor. A circular fingerprint reader is located immediately below the two cameras. While HMD’s 2017 smartphones equipped with such scanners all had them embedded into their physical Home buttons, the Finnish company opted for a different approach this year and already commercialized a rear-mounted fingerprint reader with the Nokia 6 (2018). The latest leaks suggest the Nokia 9 won’t have any keys on its bottom bezel, physical or capacitive.
HMD recently confirmed it will be attending this year’s iteration of the Mobile World Congress, with one of its executives telling consumers to expect something “awesome” from the company’s late February conference set to take place in Barcelona, Spain. The Nokia 9 would be the start of the show should it appear at the event, though the firm is even more likely to use the happening as an opportunity for announcing the Western launches of the Nokia 6 (2018) and Nokia 7.
