Huawei MediaPad M5 Leaks From All Angles In New Renders

Huawei’s upcoming MediaPad M5 tablet lineup has been recently envisioned in a series of grayscale renders depicting both an 8.4-inch and 10.1-inch model. There’s no confirmation on whether the renders are official but they are fairly detailed and look the part, so they may have been based on real product specifications. As a reminder, the MediaPad M5 bearing the model number SHT-W09 already passed through the FCC last week where it revealed the lack a standard 3.5mm headphone jack. Likewise, the tablets seen in these latest renders at hand lack the same connector, and it’s unclear why the OEM may have decided to omit it.

The initial argument in favor of removing the 3.5mm headphone jack revolved around the idea of saving space while making devices – like smartphones – thinner. However, judging by these latest renders, it looks like both Huawei MediaPad M5 tablets should have a profile thick enough to accommodate a standard 3.5mm audio connector without much trouble. Besides, tablets are inherently less portable than smartphones and ideally, they make up for this by offering additional features alongside a larger display. But regardless of Huawei’s reasons and assuming that the MediaPad M5 will indeed look exactly like these renders, then prospective buyers will have to rely on a USB Type-C connector or a dongle in order to listen to media on their headphones. Other than this detail, both tablets appear to have relatively thin side bezels, a physical “home” button that may double as a fingerprint sensor, 2.5D glass covering their displays – judging by the way the protective glass curves around all four edges – and a metal unibody case, as suggested by the presence of antenna strips visible on the back panels of the products. There are some key differences between the two models, as the 8.4-inch variant was primarily designed for portrait mode, whereas the larger 10.1-inch model is better suited for landscape viewing.

As for other hardware specifications, not much is currently known, though the model that paid the FCC a visit last week was powered by a 4,980mAh battery. Previous reports also hinted at the Kirin 960 chipset with the Mali-G71 MP8 GPU and 4GB of RAM being part of the package, as well as a display with a pixel count of 2,560 x 1,600. A far as availability goes, nothing has been officially confirmed thus far but there is a chance that Huawei might unveil its new tablet series at MWC 2018 in late February.
