Hands-On With Kwikset’s New Kevo Smart Lock – CES 2018

CES is always full of new and emerging technology and for the last couple of years a big part of it has been the expansion of IoT-related products such as smart lights, smart thermostats, and other smart appliances and home products. Kwikset, which has been a well-known brand for locks for decades has launched its most recent offering at CES this year – the latest version of its smart lock system that allows consumers to make their home even smarter and make it more convenient to unlock their front door and get inside when arriving home.

The latest addition of the Kwikset Kevo smart locks offers much of what the previous versions offered to consumers but it’s now possible to interact with the locks via Android Wear, meaning if you have an Android Wear smartwatch it’s easier than ever to arrive home, unlock your front door, and walk inside, as all you’ll have to do is interact with the companion app to the lock from your wrist, which is quite a bit easier and more efficient than pulling your smartphone out of your pocket and doing the same thing.

Officially called the Kevo Contemporary, this new smart lock will come in a range of colors to fit the needs of the consumers, including Iron Black, Satin Nickel, Polished Chrome, and Venetian Bronze, and will be on sale for about $229 when the locks launch later this year, though no retailers have been mentioned specifically when it comes to where consumers may be able to pick these up. While hands-free interaction with the Kwikset Contemporary smart lock will be possible through Amazon’s Alexa software and devices that are powered by it such as Amazon’s lineup of Echo speakers, there is no mention of Google Assistant so it may not be possible at this time to control the device through Google Assistant-enabled smartphones and tablets or any of the Google Home speakers. The good news is that Kwikset’s new Kevo locks will be compatible with a range of other smart home products, like devices from Honeywell, Skybell, and Ring, as well as Nest’s Learning Thermostat.
