GuruShots Is An App That Gamifies Photo Taking & Sharing

There’s a new kind of game on the Google Play Store, called GuruShots, which gives participants the chance to show off their photography skills, get feedback or inspiration, and maybe even win some prizes. The app is based on a web-based service which launched back in 2015, which featured award-winning photographers setting up challenges for participants. Players take a photo based on the parameters of the challenge and can win prizes if they win. Better still, with more than 400 million votes cast on a monthly basis, GuruShots also serves as an excellent way for amateur photographers to gain some exposure.

As to how the app works, challenges are set up once per day. Users simply need to sign up with their Facebook, Instagram, or email account to get started as a “Newbie.” After that, it’s as simple as locating a themed challenge to take part in and submitting a photograph for judging. Those can be based on colors, types of photography, seasons, and more. Once a photo has been submitted, players can then go through and vote for their favorite images and images can be swapped out if the initial submission isn’t doing so well. Plus, because GuruShots actually displays who is liking or voting on a given photo, browsing and interacting with those other photos actually makes it more likely for others to see a user’s work. The prizes vary and are provided by app sponsors, but can include high-dollar photography equipment, among other things. However, winning prizes and being featured in the in-app exhibit, as a result, is not the only way to get exposure. Photos that are particularly well scored can end up in “Trending Photos.” Players level their way through the ranks via achievements, votes, likes, and wins until they hit the top rank of “Guru.”

Meanwhile, the app is completely free to use and the majority of any items or power-ups associated with in-app purchases can be earned through simply playing. Unfortunately, that doesn’t seem to necessarily mean that everybody has a fair shot.  Power-ups allow users extra photo swapping opportunities to help users find that one photo that’s going to trend or provide extra exposure for any photos they do submit. With that said, the app still seems to be an excellent way to test skills and grow as an amateur photographer in a way that’s completely different from other photography apps.
