Google has taken to its official blog to announce brand new investments in the world’s fifth largest population of internet users -Indonesia – through a local startup called GO-JEK. For those who may not already be aware, GO-JEK is a company that bills itself as a hyperlocal transport, logistics, and payments startup. It is also a direct competitor to services offered by the likes of Uber or Lyft and specializes in both motorcycle and car taxi services, as well as food and grocery delivery services – though it does offer a range of other services. However, Google’s motivation for investment comes down to far more than helping one local company out. According to the company, its wider goal is to further improve the Indonesian tech market as a whole, through the promotion of local companies that are actively participating in technology’s expansion in the region.
Although no financial information about the investment has been provided yet, what is immediately clear from the announcement is how important Indonesia is to Google’s global strategy for the foreseeable future. As the company points out, the country has more than 133 million individuals currently active online and expansion of participation is growing quickly. Google has, as a result, made a commitment to the region – training as many as 60,000 mobile app developers in the region through its Gapura Digital program, with 40,000 of those being small business owners. Moreover, it was the second country to receive Google’s public Wi-Fi delivery product called Google Station. Going further still, a substantial portion of the company’s development has been related to creating high-quality, low resource applications for use in regions where internet access tends to be less than optimal. Examples, of course, include YouTube Go, Files Go, and even a new variation of Android called Android Go.
It goes without saying that Google also almost certainly wants to establish and maintain an influential role in those newly developing regions. However, the current efforts by the company, with investments in local companies such as GO-JEK at the forefront, primarily seem to be moving in hopes of generating genuine growth for those areas. Google says the goal is to prompt and inspire local efforts in the development of technology-based solutions and software, to keep progress in fields of technology moving forward.
