Cleer Inc. introduced a new standalone virtual reality (VR) headset at this year’s CES in Las Vegas called the VISTA. The product seems to be aiming to compete with other VR solutions in the all-in-one VR category, however, it seems to come with a relatively high price tag compared to upcoming alternatives like the Oculus Go. Likewise, the Cleer VISTA is powered by a mobile processor from Qualcomm and is paired with a touchpad controller supporting swiping gestures.
According to the manufacturer, the Cleer VISTA features the Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 chipset which was officially introduced at Mobile World Congress in February 2015. The chipset was manufactured by Samsung on a 14nm FinFET LPP process and houses four Kryo CPU cores in a 2+2 configuration, clocked at up to 2.15GHz, as well as the Adreno 530 graphics chip. Although the Snapdragon 820 hasn’t seen many uses in the smartphone segment in recent times, the chipset seems to be one of the solutions of choice for VR hardware manufacturers, along with the newer Snapdragon 821 SoC. Moving on to other hardware characteristics, the Cleer VISTA features a 2.5K AMOLED display, built-in headphones, and should offer up to 3 hours of use on a single battery charge. Another selling point of the gadget is an adjustable head strap designed to be both versatile and comfortable, as well as soft foam inserts that can easily be replaced if needed, according to the manufacturer.
While software details haven’t been mentioned, it’s logical to assume the Cleer VISTA runs Android OS, judging by the inclusion of an ARM mobile processor from Qualcomm. But as a standalone VR headset, the unit doesn’t need to be connected to a smartphone or PC in order to display VR content. Cleer’s solution will reportedly be ready for shipping by the second half of 2018, and the product will be accompanied by an MSRP of $349.99. This sounds a bit steep considering other solutions on the market, such as the upcoming Oculus Go which is powered by the newer Snapdragon 821 chipset and should launch at $199. Meanwhile, a high-end VR platform like the Oculus Rift bundled with Touch controllers and sensors has been available for $399 since October, much like HTC’s Vive, making for a very competitive space for newcomers such as Cleer.
