Amazon’s Alexa assistant will now let you send SMS text messages using your voice

Have an Amazon Alexa device? If so, you’ve got a new feature to try out.

You can now tell Amazon Alexa to send SMS text messages in the US. Simply launch the Alexa app on your phone and go into the Conversations tab, then tap Contacts > My Profile > Send SMS.

Once the Send SMS setting is enabled, you can tell Alexa to send a “message” and it will try to send a message using Amazon’s Alexa messaging service. If that fails, it’ll send an SMS. Alternately, you can tell Alexa to send a “text message” and it’ll send out an SMS right away.

This feature is currently only available on Android devices. Amazon explains that it can’t do the same thing on iOS because Apple doesn’t offer its messaging API to third-parties.

This sounds like a pretty solid addition to Alexa’s bag of tricks. Sure, you can use your voice to send SMS text messages using Google Assistant, but having another way to send SMS using your voice doesn’t hurt. For example, it could come in handy if your phone is charging in another room but you’ve got an Alexa device nearby.

If you’ve got an Amazon Alexa device, try this new feature out and let us know how it works!
