Two new Xiaomi-branded smartphones have been certified by the 3C authority in China, and according to reports, we’re looking at the Redmi Note 5 variants here. These two listings actually date back to January 8, though they have not been spotted until now. The two devices in question are the MET7S and MEE7S, those are their model numbers, and once they appear on TENAA (China’s equivalent to the FCC), we’ll probably be able to confirm whether those two handsets are the Redmi Note 5 variants or not.
Having said that, the Redmi 5 sported MEE7 and MET7 model numbers back when it was certified, while the Redmi 5 Plus cam with MDT1 and MDE1 model numbers. Those two handsets were introduced in early December, and some info that was shared by MIUI moderator suggested that the Redmi 5 Plus actually replaced the Redmi Note 5, suggesting that the Redmi Note 5 will not launch at all. Well, several rumors since then hinted that the Redmi Note 5 is coming, though it remains to be seen if it will be a whole new device, or a rebranded Redmi 5 Plus, as yesterday’s rumor suggested. According to the info that popped up yesterday, the Redmi 5 Plus will arrive to India under a different name, it will be called the Redmi Note 5, which kind of suggests that the forum moderator was right since the get-go.
Based on the Redmi 5 Plus’ specifications, it is easily possible that it replaced the Redmi Note 5, at least in some markets. But let’s just say that is not the case, if Xiaomi is planning to release a whole new device under the Redmi Note 5 name, that phone will probably sport both similar specs and design to the Redmi Note 5. The phone will be made out of metal, while it will sport a rear-facing fingerprint scanner. Somewhat thin bezels will also be a part of the package, just like on the Redmi 5 Plus, and the device will ship with a fullHD+ display, which will be around 6 inches large. MIUI 9 will come pre-installed on it, and a rather large battery will be in play as well, at least a 4,000mAh battery.
