Fans of Chrome OS who also happen to be running the operating system on one of Toshiba’s now 2-year-old Chromebook 2 devices appear to finally be gaining access to Android Apps on Chrome OS. Unfortunately for the time being, the change will only be arriving on those devices that are running their laptop-like device on the beta channel and who have updated to version 64 of Chrome OS. With that said, there is a lot to love about the ability to run full Android apps on a device that ordinarily only has access to web apps. Looking past that particular model of Chromebook, it has also been reported that some other devices that have been updated to version 64 of the OS via the beta channel are also now seeing an appearance of the Play Store. One such device has been noted to be Acer’s Chromebook 15 C910.
With no official list as to which devices will be getting Android apps from this update, in particular, there could be any number of other Chromebook models set to receive the Google Play Store on the beta channel. For those adventurous enough to switch channels to see if it is appearing on their devices yet, it bears mention that users on that channel are more likely to experience bugs. Users who choose to switch to the beta will, upon going back to the stable channel, also need to completely reset their Chromebook via a powerwash. That means that after switching back their Chromebook will be returned to factory settings. That isn’t necessarily a problem, aside from the need to sign back in, unless a given user is not taking advantage of the backup features available via the cloud-based system. However, the appearance of apps on the beta channel should mean the change will be available once the update goes stable as well, so it may be best holding off for those feeling a bit more wary about the process.
In the meantime, for those who really want to switch, moving to the beta channel on any Chromebook is easy enough. Users simply need to access their settings menu by clicking on their profile picture in the taskbar, followed by the gear icon. From there, clicking the menu icon in the top left corner of the screen will reveal a hamburger menu. Users will want to click on “About Chrome OS.” Finally, by selecting “detailed build information” and then “change channel,” users will be able to select the beta channel.
