T-Mobile’s Galaxy S8 & S8 Plus Gets December Security Patch

T-Mobile is rolling out an update that will install the December 2017 Android security patch to the Samsung Galaxy S8 and the Galaxy S8 Plus. This update resolves several critical vulnerabilities found in the media framework and system portion of Google’s operating system. Some of the security issues fixed in this update are classified either as remote code execution or denial of service exploits. In addition, this software upgrade includes fixes for ten vulnerabilities found in Samsung’s proprietary skin. It seems that the update does contain any new features or system improvements, according to the documentation released on the carrier’s website.

The update is currently being distributed automatically, although it may take several days before all units receive the software upgrade. However, users may attempt to manually trigger the installation process by going to the device settings and proceeding to the “Software update” section. Just in case it is not possible for the software package to be downloaded either through a Wi-Fi network or a mobile data connection, users have the option of connecting the handset to a personal computer and updating the smartphone using Samsung’s proprietary tool. Before downloading the update, it is important to verify if the smartphone’s internal flash storage has sufficient free space to temporarily keep the installation file, which has a size of around 127MB. In addition, the user should back up the files and images stored in the handset to a personal computer or a microSD card to prevent loss of important data.

Both the Samsung Galaxy S8 and the Galaxy S8 Plus were unveiled in March 2017. The variants of the two handsets sold in the United States are powered by the Snapdragon 835 SoC from Qualcomm, which is comprised of an octa-core Kryo 64-bit CPU and the Adreno 540 GPU. The smaller smartphone, the Galaxy S8, sports a 5.8-inch display and a 3,000mAh battery while the larger handset, the Galaxy S8 Plus, includes a 6.2-inch panel and a 3,500mAh battery. The two handsets contain 4GB of RAM and 64GB of internal flash storage, which could be expanded by a microSD card. The rear camera of both devices is equipped with a 12-megapixel sensor with an aperture size of f/1.7 while the front-facing selfie shooter has an 8-megapixel snapper. The devices originally shipped with Android 7.0 Nougat pre-installed although the manufacturer is expected to upgrade the operating system of the handsets to Android 8.0 Oreo soon.
