Opera Software is planning on launching an Android app dedicated to serving news and video content in the near future, the Oslo, Norway-based browser developer said earlier this week. The company’s latest decision was prompted by the success of its newsreader service which surpassed 100 million users as of November, with Opera being quick to point out that it’s referring to the number of its monthly active readers. The platform itself grew in a rapid fashion, having recorded only two million monthly active users less than a year ago, with Opera interpreting its success as evidence that the market is still searching for a reliable news delivery service. The addition of the feature to the Opera Mini browser is believed to have been the largest contributing factor to the quick growth of the solution, with the firm’s internal numbers showing that its average user opens between 65 and 81 news articles on a daily basis.
The upcoming Android app is set to be powered by the same artificial intelligence technologies behind the company’s existing newsreader service, with this particular aspect of the platform being advertised as one of its main selling points. The AI solution was designed to analyze one’s viewing habits and use them as a basis for serving a highly personalized reading experience, ultimately delivering content users are most likely to care about. That particular philosophy is nearly identical to the one utilized by Google across a variety of the Alphabet-owned company’s services, yet the market appears to be large enough for another major news delivery platform, as suggested by the success of Opera’s offering.
Besides improving one’s Internet browsing experience, Opera claims its platform also benefits publishers whose content organically finds its way to their target audiences thanks to the solution. Over the course of this year, the software developer agreed to 800 new publishing partnerships with firms whose websites were included to its content library. With mobile browsing now accounting for the majority of Internet usage in the consumer space, the mobile-first approach to news delivery is something Opera is keen on pursuing going forward. The Norwegian company is expected to announce more content partnerships in 2018 and while the Android version of its newsreader platform still doesn’t have a firm release date attached to it, it’s also expected to launch at some point next year.
