Fans of the popular Oddworld games will be happy to learn that there’s now a new mobile game called Oddworld: New ‘n’ Tasty for Android. The game, which was developed for the platform by Oddworld Inhabitants Inc, is a remake of another title bearing the same name that was released on consoles from back in 2014, which is itself based on Oddworld” Abe’s Oddysee. Unfortunately, that does result in a couple of caveats. For example, that means that it isn’t likely to be anything new for those who have already played or beaten the original game. It also may make the game’s price tag of $7.99 seem a bit steep. However, this isn’t the first time a title previously only playable on consoles or PC has been brought to mobile, let alone for a premium price. Having said that, Oddworld: New ‘n’ Tasty looks as fun as ever in this latest release and the price point is hard to argue with when considering that some other premium console titles can run upwards of $15.
With regard to the game itself, players take on the role of Abe in an effort to save his fellow Mudokons from the game’s antagonist, Molluck the Glukkon, who wants to turn the entire population into snacks. The game is a side-scrolling platformer and movement is accomplished via simple on-screen swipes, with certain actions, such as using an item or sneaking, controlled by on-screen buttons. It’s a simplified approach that should play out well as compared to some other games which require a player to cover up part of the screen in order to use a digital toggle switch for movement. Better still controls are customizable and players are given another often-overlooked feature via the inclusion of full support for Bluetooth controllers and HID-controllers. Another possible caveat is that the game is designed to run the best on the latest hardware. The developers specifically say that Rockchip, Broadcom, and Amlogic devices aren’t supported and that, at a minimum, a 2GHz dual-core processor coupled with an “Adreno 4xx, Nvidia Tegra K1, ARM Mali T7xx, PowerVR Rogue or Intel HD Graphics GPU” is required, as is a minimum of 2GB of RAM. However, performance settings can be adjusted in the app and in-game resolution is variable. So it should still run on plenty of modern budget-friendly devices.
Aside from that, Oddworld: New ‘n’ Tasty also features cloud saving options thanks to the Google Play Games API, which also provides for somewhat competitive features like a leaderboard and achievements. Aside from that, the developers have tweaked the game to include a new tutorial system, with a more gradual introduction involved with the game’s first area. Anybody interested in checking it out, in the meantime, can find out more via the source link or directly through the Google Play button below.
