iOttie has been making fantastic car mounts for years, and I’ve had one in each of my cars since they first came out. Each generation has gotten a little bit better and the company has even started offering Qi wireless charging mounts.
The Easy One Touch 4 dash mount is the latest version of the dash mount and it makes small improvements over the third generation product. The new mount is smaller yet still fits devices from 2.3 to 3.5 inches wide (not screen diameter!). The legs are now adjustable like the very first model, though the default position is fixed in the center (which I love) and the legs can be removed entirely if needed. The reach is extended about 1 inch thanks to the longer adjustable extension arm. iOttie also replaced the annoying notched knobs for regular flat knobs that can easily be gripped.
The suction cup is still made of that crazy sticky gel material. Once it sticks to the dash, it’s very difficult to remove (but won’t damage a plastic dash even after years of being adhered). Engage the suction cup and it’s not going anywhere. My MR2 has a heavily dimpled dashboard and my third gen mount has been on there for over a year, often baking in the sun, without falling off. Considering it’s not a smooth surface, that’s absolutely amazing. However, removal is a pain. If you want better adhesion, it comes with a dashboard pad you glue to your dash.
These mounts give you tons of adjustments. You can extend the arm outward to bring the phone closer to you, you can adjust rotation freely on the ball socket, the angle is adjustable so you can install the mount in any orientation, and the foot can be moved side to side as well as up and down.
The retention mechanism is another highlight of the mount. Once the device is pushed into the mount and that huge center button is depressed, the side arms snap shut and hold it in place. I’ve never had a device fall out of the mount even during autocross racing with sticky tires (my friend got carsick, but my phone stayed put). To release the phone, you press the two side switches in. It’s an elegant system, and one that fits huge phones with ease. The 6-inch Huawei Mate 10 Pro and Honor 7X both fit with room to spare.
My only issue is a small amount of instability up and down when the arm is fully extended. With an 8.3-inch arm and a stiff suspension on my car, the phone bounces a little bit over big bumps. The instability is far improved over the second generation mount (which was floppy to a ridiculous extent) but shortening the arm as much as possible is a good idea. Nonetheless, the long arm is critical for newer cars with windshields a mile away from the driver.
