During the recent ‘Max Your View’ event in London where the Honor V10 and X7 were brought on stage, the firm’s parent company Huawei demonstrated its Face ID-like feature once again, this time in the form of a sensor array wrapped in an accessory that can connect to smartphones via USB. The technology called “Point Cloud Depth Camera” was originally demoed during the previous Honor launch event in November, though this time around, it appears that the OEM may have put a bigger accent on the camera’s potential uses in the Augmented Reality space, rather than demonstrating its phone unlocking functionalities. Nevertheless, according to a recent report from Notebook Italia that captured the video below, the Chinese OEM’s Face ID-like camera may debut on the upcoming Huawei P11 which was also recently rumored to adopt an iPhone X-styled camera notch.
On paper, Huawei’s Point Cloud Depth Camera is an impressive gadget, being able to reconstruct human faces with a level of accuracy of less than one millimeter, all thanks to the 3D sensor assembly’s capability to capture around 300,000 points in space, which is 10 times more than what the Apple iPhone X can do. This accuracy is demonstrated in the video below where a Huawei representative achieves an impressive 3D representation of his face in just around 10 seconds. Evidently, the technology can be used as the basis of future face unlocking technologies but is still not limited to them. According to a company spokesperson on the show floor, the solution can also be used in Augmented Reality (AR) applications for creating avatars and similar use cases. As far as secure authentication is concerned, the sensor provides payment-level face verification and can recognize one’s face in just o.4 seconds.
As far as availability is concerned, the source speculates that the Huawei P11 expected to launch in 2018 will be the first smartphone from the Chinese OEM to adopt the Point Cloud Depth Camera, and this idea is further fueled by the rumor that the P11 will have a notch similar to the iPhone X. As yet it’s unclear whether Huawei will limit this technology to use in conjunction with smartphones or if it will also release it as an accessory for users who may want to take advantage of its AR capabilities in other ways.
