Los Angeles, California-based mobile developer Jam City reached a licensing agreement with Warner Bros. and will be bringing a new Harry Potter game to Android devices in 2018, the two companies announced Tuesday. Titled Harry Potter: Hogwarts Mystery, the game will put players in the role of a Hogwarts student and offer an unprecedented level of customizability in the Harry Potter gaming franchise. No specific genres have yet been named, though initial descriptions of the game appear to hint at some sort of an adventure that’s completely unlike Jam City’s Family Guy Freakin Mobile Game which launched earlier this year.
After creating their own characters, players will be tasked with successfully graduating from the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, the developer said, adding that the game will lead them through every individual academic year. Besides participating in classes and extracurricular activities featuring a wide variety of well-known characters from the famous fantasy universe, Harry Potter: Hogwarts Mystery is also expected to present players with a broad range of encounters starring well-known locations and magical creatures. No screenshots or gameplay footage have yet been provided by Jam City, though interested players can pre-register for updates by referring to the banner below. Harry Potter: Hogwarts Mystery will be published by Warner Bros.-owned Portkey Games brand established specifically for the purpose of supporting gaming experiences inspired by J.K. Rowling’s lore. The Android version of the game will be released on both the Google Play Store and Amazon Appstore at some point in 2018, whereas a more specific availability window will presumably be provided come spring. While the involved parties are yet to confirm that, it’s understood that the game will launch on Android and iOS simultaneously.
The new development marks the second announcement of a Harry Potter mobile game in just over a month, with Pokemon GO developer Niantic recently confirming it’s working on an augmented reality title called Harry Potter: Wizards Unite. Much like Hogwarts Mystery, Niantic’s project is still a relative unknown, though both games are set to be released next year and Jam City’s project is likely to offer a more traditional gaming experience. Like previous Android projects from Warner Bros. and Jam City, Harry Potter: Hogwarts Mystery is expected to be a free-to-play game with optional in-app purchases.
