Google Redesigns Trade-In Shipping Kits With A Cardboard Box

Google’s trade-in program just got a little bit better, or at least the process of trading in a device has improved for customers after the release of Google’s new Store trade-in kits. While the search engine giant had previously provided customers with plastic bubble wrap-linen sleeves to ship their devices when opting for the trade-in program, a Redditor recently captured Google’s new shipping kit on camera and it seems to comprise a stronger cardboard box with its insides padded in foam.

The Google Store trade-in kit has apparently been revised, and customers who may want to trade-in their devices for a new Pixel 2 smartphone will now work with a relatively slim cardboard box and a simple flyer containing the necessary steps for preparing a trade-in device for shipping. The paper contains instructions on how to factory reset smartphones powered either by Android or iOS before shipping, as well as a quick guide on how to appropriately place the handset inside the box and where to place the shipping label on the outside. At the end of the day, this appears to be a more secure solution and customers should rest easier knowing that the chance of their trade-in smartphones to be damaged during shipping has been minimized.

Google’s trade-in program was introduced around the time the Pixel 2 series was released a few months ago. It allows prospective buyers to get an estimated value of their current devices and trade them with Google for a refund credit on their cards. Various aspects are taken into consideration when determining the value of a phone, ranging from the amount of on-board memory to whether the device is scratched or powers on at all. Having said that, trade-in values can vary from as low as $30 and go up to $150 for devices like the iPhone SE, to as high up as $380 for smartphones like the iPhone 7 Plus. Nexus 6P owners can also shave around $100 off their Pixel 2 purchase using the trade-in program, but once again these figures are not fixed and will differ on a case-by-case basis. Furthermore, prices and refunds will also differ based on whether an existing device is traded-in for the smaller Pixel 2 or the full-fledged Pixel 2 XL, as the latter carries a higher price tag by default.
