As virtual assistants are increasingly growing in popularity and gaining more smart features, Google is expanding the reach of the Google Assistant to more devices. Google Assistant has already been available on a slew of Android devices, but some were still left out of the loop up until now. The company has now announced that its Assistant is ready to hit Android tablets running Android 7.0 Nougat and the older Android 6.0 Marshmallow, as well as smartphones running Android 5.0 Lollipop. Google Assistant brings a number of features to the table, aiming to maximize the Android experience by adding more features and convenience.
Google Assistant first hit Android 6.0 Marshmallow and newer Android versions with Google Play Services earlier this year, but handsets running an older version of Android did not get access. With the Assistant now available for Android 5.0 Lollipop smartphones as well, Google is aiming to reach as many smartphone users as possible. Google Assistant has already started rolling out on Android 5.0 Lollipop in a number of countries, available in both English and Spanish, depending on market. The United States, the UK, Australia, India, Canada, and Singapore are getting the Assistant set to English, while the Spanish version is available in the United States, Spain, and Mexico. Android Lollipop users in Japan, Italy, Germany, Korea, and Brazil, are also getting Google Assistant on those devices.
On tablets running Android 7.0 Nougat and Android 6.0 Marshmallow, Google Assistant will become available next week. In the United States, the language will be set to English. Google Assistant will enable users to perform a number of tasks such as make shopping lists and see them synced on both smartphones and tablets, set reminders, get information about the weather, control various smart home devices such as lights and plugs, and more. Just earlier this week, the Google Assistant also gained the ability to sync smart home devices. On phones and tablets, users can simply ask questions or utter commands and the Assistant will offer the desired information. Once the update rolls out and Google Assistant becomes available, a new app icon for the Assistant will show up in the list of “All apps.” The latest rollout significantly widens the reach of Google Assistant, adding to the already supported devices and languages.
