Razer on Wednesday officially announced its first smartphone in the form of the Razer Phone, revealing one of the most (mobile) gaming-oriented handsets ever created. While the Razer Phone boasts some premium specs meant to ensure it’s capable of handling even the most graphically intensive Android games from the Google Play Store, the device was also designed as a reliable daily driver that provides a high-end user experience in a wide variety of scenarios and not just during gaming sessions. That product strategy led Razer to equip its first Android-powered device with a high-quality camera setup that can compete with top performers in this segment like the Galaxy Note 8, Pixel 2, LG V30, and the newly released iPhone X.
The rear panel of the Razer Phone accommodates a dual-camera setup entailing two 12-megapixel sensors, with the main one being mounted behind a wide-angle lens with an aperture of f/1.75, one of the brightest in the mobile industry. The secondary module is sitting behind a zoom lens with an f/2.6 aperture, with the two being designed to work in conjunction and deliver an optimal performance in a broad range of circumstances. LG’s recent flagships utilize a similar setup to deliver high-quality portraits with pronounced depth-of-field effects while also being able to preserve details when zoomed, with Razer presumably looking to achieve similar results with its new device. Both sensors take advantage of phase detection autofocus (PDAF) support and are accompanied by a dual-LED (dual-tone) flash unit. The San Francisco, California-based company has yet to reveal the pixel size of its sensors which likely hovers around the 1.4µm mark.
The regular-sized top bezel of the Razer Phone features an 8-megapixel sensor supporting a fixed-focus lens with an aperture of f/2.0. This setup is fairly standard for high-end devices and should deliver a solid selfie and video calling experience, though it isn’t as close to the best performers on the market as the main camera system of the device is, at least in terms of pure specifications. The Razer Phone is set to become available for pre-orders today and will be released in the United States, Canada, and Europe on November 17th, priced at approximately $699. While the phone’s target audience is unlikely to purchase it solely due to its camera performance, its imaging capabilities still appear to be of the high-end variety and shouldn’t leave much to be desired.
