European LG V30 Now Officially Supports Bootloader Unlocking

The LG V30 has now been officially added to the OEM’s list of smartphones supporting bootloader unlocking. Specifically, the list now contains the LG V30 carrying the model number H930 sold in parts of Europe, as well as the model number H930G which has been released only in Italy. As usual, an unlocked bootloader allows users to flash custom ROMs and/or participate in Android developments using the device, however, while this feature is now officially supported by LG for the V30 flagship, it is intended primarily for developers and as a result, unlocking the bootloader will void the warranty.

For readers who may not be familiar with the term, a bootloader is a computer program that resides at the foundation of every Android smartphone, or indeed a computing device relying on an OS. Its purpose is to manage system partitions and load the operating system when the device is powered on, and a locked bootloader generally prevents users from tampering with the operating system, thus making custom ROM flashing much more difficult. In contrast, an unlocked bootloader allows users to flash custom ROMs with much more ease, whether for their own personal use or for the purpose of Android OS development. Although there are workarounds to unlocking a bootloader without a manufacturer’s consent, some OEMs like LG support bootloader unlocking officially – at least for certain smartphone models – and this generally accelerates the custom ROM development process and promotes an active developer community around a particular device. However, regardless of whether bootloader unlocking is or isn’t officially supported by the OEM, this action falls outside the boundaries of normal day-to-day usage and unlocking the bootloader will void a smartphone’s warranty with the manufacturer.

LG V30 owners who may want to unlock their devices’ bootloaders or learn more about the process itself can head down to the source link below where the OEM offers a complete list of supported devices and provides detailed step-by-step instructions. As yet only the LG V30 in Europe seems to be officially supported and whether or not the device and/or the LG V30 Plus will receive the same treatment in the US is unclear.
