Updated November 2018

The rain has cometh back in Portland this month.

Hey, I’m not complaining – I know what I signed up for when I moved here and it’s still about a 1000 times better then the winter we had last year (oh non-stop drizzle starting on November 1st. It’s really all about trying to make the most of the weather. So I’ve updated my little round-up of things to do in Portland when it rains.

I’m also open to suggestions as there are A LOT of rainy days to fill here. If you’re visiting Portland and looking for things to do when it isn’t raining – do make sure to check out my Travel Guide to Portland, Oregon for more trip ideas.

Here are a couple Portland rainy day activities to add to your list:

1) Go See a Movie

I know going to see a movie when it rains is an obvious one, but Portland is home to some truly unique movie theaters in restored and repurposed spaces. The seats are usually pretty plush and comfy!

A few of my favorite Portland movie theaters include McMenamins Kennedy School House, St Johns Theater & Pub, Bagdad Theater, Hollywood Theater and Living Room Theaters. You can enjoy wine, beer and some gourmet pub grub during your film.

2) Try a Tea Tasting

One of my favorite places to meet people is at Smith Teamakers in SE for a tea tasting in their brand new tea room. I love going for a tea flight and picking and choosing new teas to try. My other favorite thing to order are one of their nitro cold brew carbonated teas! Make sure to also pick out a couple tea bags to take home.

I also really enjoy going for Afternoon Tea on a rainy weekend. Russian Afternoon Tea at Headwaters is a must. You’ll be treated to all sorts of sweet and savory Russian bites you may have never tried before.

Hotel DeLuxe also hosts their own Afternoon Tea Service as well, which is more traditional with mini sandwiches, scones and sweets. Both tea services require reservations made in advance.

3) Go Bowling or Play Ping-Pong!

I’m a terrible bowler.

But that doesn’t stop me from going bowling! Most alleys have a full menu and great food, so you could easily make a fun night out of it.. Check out Grand Central Bowl, Punch Bowl Social and Pips & Bounce for a round of ping-pong. These are great places to hang out in when it rains in Portland.

4) Go for a Spin

Too slippery to go for a ride outside? Head inside to one of Portland’s many spinning studios for a spin class. BurnCycle is a homegrown, local favourite when you need a bit of uplifting and a proper sweat session during the dark days of winter.

5) Take a Cooking Class

I recently took a gnocchi cooking class at Sur La Table and I loved it! They have classes happening almost every single day of the week. Check out their class schedule online and take the intimidation out of cooking or try a new cuisine.

6) Hit up a Museum or Gallery

Take the opportunity to finally get around to visiting one of Portland’s many museums or galleries when it rains. I personally love the Portland Art Museum (there’s an Andy Warol exhibit on right now) and OMSI – which is sort of like a Science Center.

The OMSI After-Dark series includes live music, DJs and booze and happens once a month for the 21+ crowd.

7) An Arcade Date + Pizza

Have a throwback date with a pizza dinner at Apizza Scholls in SE Hawthorne for one of the best pies in Portland. For me, I gotta go with their classic pepperoni. After dinner, head next door to Quarterworld for drinks, pinball and classic arcade games.

8) Tour Bob’s Red Mill + Lunch

I had no idea that the mothership of Bob’s Red Mill is located just outside of Portland. If it’s a weekday, you can join their daily factory tour at 10 AM. On the weekends you can grab breakfast or lunch in their restaurant and shop their gigantic store full of their products! They are closed on Sundays.

Dave’s Killer Bread Factory Outlet is also across the street if you want to stock up on your favourite loaf with 10% off or more. Since moving to Portland – Dave’s has become my favourite for sliced sandwich bread.

deschutes-brewery

9) Self-Guided Beer Tasting Tour in the Pearl District

If you want to hit up a few breweries, the Pearl District has a few that are in walking distance of each other. If it’s pouring rain, you can always grab a quick uber ride.

I would start up north at Bridgeport Brewing and try a sampler platter of their brews. After which, you can walk south to 10 Barrel Brewing. Once you’re done there, walk across the street to Rogue Ales, then continue further down the street to Deschutes Brewery.

10) Book a Long Overdue Spa Day

Hideaway from the rain at the spa and book a long overdue massage for your sore shoulders or stiff neck. My upper body is always a mess from sitting at my desk all day. Try a Halo Massage inside a salt cave at Zama Massage.

I also love booking a Spa Pedicure at Zama and letting my toes dry in their salt room (available during the week). Bring your headphones and your favourite chillout mix to zen out.

Dosha on Hawthorne offers complimentary use of their soaking pool and steam room with a spa treatment. Loyly is a Scandinavian sauna concept that also offers massages and spa treatments. Admission to the sauna is only $15.

knot springs

My other favourite spot is Knot Springs with gorgeous views of the Portland skyline. This place is peak Portland. Instead of a bathrobe, you get a Pendleton poncho to borrow and there are lots of decor nods to the Pacific Northwest all over the spa. A 30-minute massage is only $75 and includes 1 hour of access to their soaking pools, sauna and steam room. Well worth it.

What do you like to do when it rains in Portland? Any favorite rainy day activities?
