Sony’s flagship Xperia XZ Premium handset is going to be the first smartphone in the company’s repertoire to receive its official and final update to Android 8.0 (Oreo), and the rollout begins worldwide today. Some models of the Xperia XZ Premium in certain markets will have the newest version of Android loaded up as soon as the buyer turns them on, and others should get the update shortly after being activated. For devices already in the wild, the rollout will depend on the user’s region, as well as the carrier that the phone was bought from, if it did not come directly from Sony.
This update will bring Xperia XZ Premium owners all of the usual features that one can expect from Android Oreo, as well as some new ones from Sony. Arguably the biggest feature that the update will bring to Sony’s flagship is the 3D Creator feature introduced in the Xperia XZ1 lineup, which allows users to scan real objects with the device’s camera and convert them to shareable, 3D printable models. A new predictive camera feature is also on board, which will detect a smiling subject and prime a few exposures even before you hit the shutter. On a related note, the autofocus burst feature can tell when it’s looking at a moving subject, and will adjust focus and other qualities of a set of images to eliminate blur. Sony has also fine-tuned the sound from the phone’s front speakers, and has enabled Qualcomm’s AptX technology for high-quality Bluetooth audio. Finally, app shortcuts will present users with a list of actions when long-pressing on an app icon.
This rollout marks the first official and final Oreo update to hit a Sony phone, but it is actually not the first time that the cookie-inspired OS has seen Sony hardware. The software here apes the Xperia XZ1 lineup because both the XZ1 and its Compact variant hit shelves with Oreo on board. The newest version of Android also hit Sony’s Open Devices program in pure AOSP form, without any of Sony’s usual modifications. This version of Oreo has been available on various members of the Xperia XZ and Xperia X families since earlier this month.
