Signs that your calcium, potassium, and magnesium levels are off and how to fix them!

Electrolytes are very important in order for our body to work properly. They have many important functions in our body and we all need them. If their levels are off some functions in our body won’t work properly.

Magnesium helps the muscle contraction and it also lowers the anxiety, assists the nerves, strengthens the bones, helps digestion, and balances the fluids in the body.

Sodium signals the nerves, helps muscle contraction, and maintains the balance of the fluids in the body.

Calcium prevents blood clotting, and keeps the bones and teeth healthy.

Chloride maintains the fluid balance.

Potassium regulates the blood pressure and helps the work of the muscles.

Here are some of the reasons for an imbalance of the electrolytes:

  • Hormonal imbalance
  • Sickness
  • Medications
  • Kidney damage and disease
  • Chemotherapy treatments
  • Antibiotics
  • Improper absorption of food nutrients
  • Unhealthy diet

The common symptoms

  • Confusion
  • Constipation or diarrhea
  • Fatigue
  • Dizziness
  • Problems with the bones
  • Headaches
  • Irregular blood pressure
  • Joint pain
  • Changes in the appetite and weight
  • Thirst
  • Anxiety
  • Weak muscles
  • Fever
  • Insomnia

If you have some of these symptoms you should visit your doctor in order to do some test and find the reasons for these problems.

Here are the normal levels of electrolytes:

  • Chloride 97-107 mEq/L
  • Magnesium 1.5-2.5 mEq/L
  • Sodium 136-145 mEq/L
  • Potassium 5-5.3 mEq/L
  • Calcium 5-5.5 mEq/L

Dizziness and weakness are both symptoms of high sodium levels, you can even have some seizures and fall into a coma.

Lowered levels of magnesium will make you have night sweats, insomnia, tiredness, increased heartbeats, muscle spasms.

If your levels of potassium are off, then you will have changes in the heartbeat and you might even develop hyperkalemia.

Kidney stones, constipation, vomiting, bone fractures are all symptoms of too much calcium.

Lowered levels of potassium and magnesium may lead to muscle spasms.

How to treat electrolyte imbalance?

  • Drink plenty of water
  • Eat a healthy diet and avoid processed foods and sugars
  • Check your medications because they might be the reason for that
  • Take supplements if you need
