A new easter egg has been discovered in the Developer Preview of Android 8.1 Oreo for the Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL, with some dedicated enthusiasts being able to access a bubble-squeezing mini game that takes advantage of the Active Edge feature supported by Google’s latest flagships. By repeatedly tapping the “Squeeze sensitivity” option found at the very top of the “Active Edge” section of your system Settings app, you’re able to activate this Easter egg that comes in the form of a simple game tasking you with bursting what appear to be colorful bubbles or balloons by squeezing them. The video below shows the hidden activity in action, with the mini game itself apparently being of the endless variety and its only losing condition being that you run out of space for accepting new bubbles that are always floating toward the top of your screen. The device on which the feature was demonstrated is the Pixel 2 XL running Android 8.1 Oreo and the root-free variant of the Substratum theme engine with Sai’s Oreo Theme.
Active Edge is one of several unique functionalities of the Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL, though Google isn’t advertising it as aggressively as HTC promoted the Edge Sense feature of its U11 flagship, with the two being essentially identical and based on the same technology adapted by the Taiwanese original equipment manufacturer. The addition of Active Edge to the new Pixel-series devices entails a pressure-sensitive frame that can recognize when it’s being squeezed and identify numerous levels of pressure exerted on it by the user, then use that information to start various software actions like activating the Google Assistant or taking a photo if the default Camera app is open. In this regard, Active Edge can be seen as a physical shortcut mechanism that’s there if you want it but can also be disabled in just a few taps.
The Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL hit the market earlier this month after amassing twice as many pre-orders as their predecessors did, according to Google CEO Sundar Pichai. The Alphabet-owned company recently extended its global warranty for the two handsets to two years in order to put some previously emerged quality control concerns at rest and both Android flagships are expected to be in short supply this holiday season.
