Cricket Wireless has launched the Alcatel Idol 5 for $199, and will be the exclusive carrier for the phone in the U.S., at least for now. Cricket says the phone just went on sale today, and the device is indeed available via its website for those who are looking for a brand-new smartphone that comes with decent specs but won’t break the bank. The Idol 5 is only being offered in one color, Metal Gray, but it can be purchased with any accompanying data plan that Cricket Wireless offers starting from the 1GB plan, and including the 4GB, 8GB, and unlimited plans as well.
The Alcatel Idol 5 comes with a 5.2-inch Full HD display, and it’s powered by the MediaTek Helio P20 octa-core processor, comes with 32GB of internal storage space and it supports expandable storage via a microSD card up to 256GB if 32GB isn’t enough room for all your apps, games, and other files. For cameras, the Idol 5 comes with a 12-megapixel rear-facing camera for the main images, and on the front it has an 8-megapixel camera. Both cameras feature a flash as well, so if lighting isn’t always the best these should help to make things a little bit brighter for a better photo.
The battery on the Idol 5 isn’t terribly large, coming in at just 2,850mAh, but it does come with MediaTek’s PumpExpress 2.0 for faster charging so in the event that the battery dies it shouldn’t take too long to charge back up. The phone also uses USB Type-C for its charging port, so that should also help the device charge up faster than if it were using a standard micro USB charging port. Alcatel has packed the Idol 5 with Android 7.0 Nougat software so it’s not entirely up to date with the newest version of Android, but it does come with Google Assistant and plenty of other nice features, and with all that it has to offer $200 is a hard price point to beat. In addition to selling the Idol 5 on its website starting from today, Cricket should also have the Idol 5 available in retail stores too, so those looking to walk into a store and walk out with the Idol 5 should be able to do so.
