Carl Pei, CEO of OnePlus, has shared what may be yet another example of the photography possible with the as-yet-unreleased OnePlus 5T. Another photo which is speculated to have been shot with the same device was revealed via Twitter just days ago, which could additionally mean that the device is getting close to being ready for release. That’s if the OnePlus 5T turns out to be what Pei is trying to hint at. However, that other photo was obviously meant to show off the light-capturing capabilities of whatever phone we’re really talking about. This new one is a portrait of a young woman and seems to show off the depth of field capabilities of the device in question, as well as color saturation and dynamic range.
As to the image itself, what really sets it apart is how natural the colors look and how well it has focused on the subject, while subtly blurring out the background. That bokeh effect has become desirable over the last several smartphone generations as a way to really draw attention to the intended subject of an image, so most smartphones are capable of creating the effect. Having said that, the distinction between focal point and background is exceptionally crisp in the image. Light management and white balance also appear to be well managed by the software and sensors the shot was captured with. The sky does seem to be slightly washed out, but that could be a result of the earlier mentioned blurring. Taken together, whatever this device turns out to be, it could be a real contender for the top spot in terms of quality smartphone cameras rounding out 2017 and going into 2018.
Unfortunately, there’s no metadata associated with the image aside from that it has been shared at a resolution of 900 by 1200 and that whatever camera captured it did so in 24-bit – meaning it could capture 16 million colors. That means there’s no way of confirming which smartphone caught the image. That also doesn’t provide too much insight into the camera sensors themselves, so everybody’s justs going to have to wait for an official reveal from OnePlus for more information about the device itself. Bearing that in mind, there’s a high likeliness Pei would want to build hype for the OnePlus 5T and he has captioned the image with the comment “What phone is he taking that photo with?…” That’s followed by an emoticon, similarly to the aforementioned previous photo share. The OnePlus 5T, meanwhile, is rumored to ship with a 6-inch fullHD+ AMOLED display with an aspect ratio of 18:9. That’s speculated to be embedded into a frame similar in size to the OnePlus 5. Behind that, the OnePlus 5T is expected to pack a 64-bit octa-core Snapdragon 835 SoC, backed up by 6GB or 8GB of ram – with different-specced variants of the device expected. All of that is presumed to be powered by Android 8.0 (Oreo) and a new version of OnePlus’s OxygenOS skin.
