I love reading what people buy at the grocery store and eat during the week. I’ve seen a few bloggers do posts on what they always buy at the grocery store and I guess I’m just fascinated by the mundane.
Here’s what always makes it into my cart every week:
Smoothie-Making Ingredients
- Bananas (organic)
- Almond Milk (unsweetened + carrageenan-free if possible)
- Frozen Berries
- Baby Spinach
- Kale Bunch
- Vega Protein & Greens
Breakfast Foods + Snacks
- Fresh Eggs (free-range, large and organic)
- Avocadoes
- Apples
- Fresh Seasonal Fruit (lately it’s been peaches, plums, cherries, apricots)
- Lemons (organic for AM lemon water)
- Greek Yogurt (with the fruit bottom)
- Almond Butter
- Whole Grain Bread (I love Dave’s Killer Bread)
- Decaf Whole Bean Coffee
- Dark Chocolate
Other Stuff
- Kombucha (growler fills are cheaper and helps my sugar + soda cravings)
- Sparkling Water (2-3 cases of La Croix from Target and I rotate through flavours)
- Onions + Garlic (I usually buy a big bag of yellow onions for cooking)
- Cilantro (for my avo toast)
- Frozen Entrees (for days when I’m stuck for lunch, usually a veggie lasagna)
- Salad Kit or Field Greens (in a bag)
- Broccoli Crowns (I like to have a side of greens with all my meals)
- Brown Rice (As a base for roasted veggie bowls)
- Wine (Rose or white – I like Underwood Wine because it comes in a smaller size)
What I Always Keep On Hand
I honestly go through phases with food. I was really into overnight oats, chia pudding and acai bowls for awhile. Now I can’t be bothered to make it all from scratch. So it really depends on what sort of phase I’m in. Here’s what I always keep on hand:
- Good Quality Olive Oil + Coconut Oil
- Whole Peppercorns (in a grinder)
- Himalayan Sea Salt
- Balsamic Vinegar
- Rolled Oats
- Almonds (whole + slivered), Dried Fruit
- Hemp Hearts, Maca Powder, Chia Seeds, Tumeric Powder, Flax Seeds
- Grass-Fed Butter
- Noodle Cups (for late-night snack attacks)
- Green Tea, Chai Tea, Matcha Powder
- Local Raw Honey
For all the other stuff, I usually pick 2-3 recipes that I will try to cook during the week. Based on that I’ll add organic chicken, organic beef, chickpeas, chicken broth, pasta, carrots, peppers or other vegetables based on our meals.
I don’t do organic for everything – but I definitely do it for meat, because we don’t eat a ton of it and when we do, we go organic. I also do the same for my dairy and I make sure it’s free of added hormones. I am picky about always getting the organic bananas (because they’re not that much more) and lemons because I drop the straight into my water.
We live around the corner from two grocery stores, so it’s easier to walk on over and pick-up random stuff during the week as we need it.
Our breakfasts are pretty boring – usually a green smoothie, coffee and if we have time we’ll make avocado toast with a sunny-side egg on top. For snacks, I like almond butter on toast and some apple slices on the side. Sometimes I’ll be out of bread and I’ll skip the toast and just have the apple slices with a tablespoon of peanut butter.
Hard-boiled eggs are also a go-to snack for me. I like to add a sprinkle of sea salt, pepper and smoked paprika.
I’ve been making decaf coffee at home because it’s harder to find when you go out. If I wake-up late or I don’t get around to making coffee in the AM, I’ll make decaf after lunch. It has a small bit of caffeine in it, so it’s not too bad to have in the afternoon.
Meal planning is so key, because I really just want to buy what we need and not end up throwing away a bunch of rotten groceries at the end of the week.
