Wireless Charging in Your Honda Vehicle: Everything You Need to Know

Due to the burgeoning popularity of wireless charging technology, automobile manufacturers have been incorporating wireless charging features into some of their more recent car models whether as a built-in feature or as an optional add-on. Although a bit late to jump on the trend, Honda has been offering a wireless charging mat as an accessory since the release of some of its 2016 models, and will be offered as a part of the standard package of the much awaited 2018 Honda Odyssey Elite.

Owning a vehicle with this feature offers you a lot of convenience when on the road. You can save yourself from the struggle of having to find an open power outlet, and bringing your messy charging cords along.

What is wireless charging?

There are two popular wireless charging standards that are currently available: Qi and PMA (which merged with A4WP to form AirFuel).

Qi (pronounced as “chee”) is the most popular of the two with over 300 compatible mobile phones and gadgets. Most car manufacturers, including Honda, choose to use this wireless charging standard for their vehicles.

PMA or Power Matters Alliance, on the other hand, was the first wireless charging standard to be considered for use in an automotive vehicle. It was first adopted by General Motors for their vehicles in 2011 back when it was still called Powermat, but it took several years before this was implemented in their 2015, 2016, and 2017 releases of GMC Sierra, GMC Yukon Denali, and Chevrolet Volt.

PMA-powered wireless charging hotspots are often found in certain Starbucks and McDonald’s branches around the world. It has recently merged with Alliance for Wireless Power (A4WP) to form AirFuel Alliance.

Charging Non-Qi Enabled Android Phones and iPhones

How can you start charging your smartphone wirelessly in your Honda vehicle? It’s pretty simple. But first, you need to find out if your device is compatible.

Like most cars, Honda makes use of the Qi standard for its wireless charging tray. You’ll find that most Android smartphones (with wireless charging capability) will be able to charge on it. But if you own an older Android model that does not have built-in wireless charging, then you can get a third-party accessory such as an adapter, which can activate your device’s wireless charging function.

Apple has yet to release an iPhone model that has wireless charging enable right of the bat, so  you will need to purchase a specialized accessory such as a wireless charging phone case that will enable your phone to charge wirelessly on your Honda’s charging tray.

There are phone cases that activate your phone’s compatibility with both Qi and PMA wireless charging standards, which saves you time for having to switch out accessories every time you encounter a wireless charging hotspot using a different standard.

However, if you own a 2018 Honda Odyssey Elite, you’ll find that its integrated wireless charging tray is compatible with both popular wireless charging standards. This feature allows you to conveniently use it both Qi and PMA compatible devices.

Using the Charging tray in Your Honda VehicleHonda Wireless charging

  1. Make sure your vehicle’s engine is on.
  2. Give the power button on your dashboard a long press to activate your system.
  3. When you see the green indicator light illuminate, it means it is ready to charge your device.
  4. Slide your phone onto the charging tray.
  5. To ensure that your device will charge properly, keep the charging surface of your device in contact with the middle of your vehicle’s charging tray.
  6. Wait for the green indicator light to turn on. This signifies that charging is finished and it’s safe to take your phone out of the charging tray.
  7. However, you may notice that there will be times that the amber indicator light will not go out despite the green light turning on. Ignore this, as this is a normal occurrence when charging certain devices.
