The reason for your leg cramps and how to prevent them!



 

If you have ever experienced charley horse, then you definitely know what we are talking about. This is something that usually occurs during sleep because we are in one position for a longer period of time. During the day we move constantly and are muscles are engaged all the time and there is constant blood flow through our body.

It is a sensation that lasts for about 10 minutes but it can be very painful and we can feel the pain even the next day.

Here are the reasons why it happens and how to prevent it

This painful muscle cramp or spasm is called “charley horse” because it is probably the pain that you will experience if a horse hit you in the thigh or calf. The reasons for it might be:

  • Dehydration

When the body is dehydrated it loses electrolytes and due to that, your muscles can’t work properly. The work of the electrolytes is to control the contraction of the muscles so if you don’t hydrate your body properly you will probably experience these cramps due to lack of liquids.

  • You are cold

A cooler room temperature might be the other reason for you muscle spasms. When we are in cooler places our muscles become stiffer and inflexible which leads to this condition. If you like sleeping in cooler rooms then don’t forget to cover yourself with a blanket.

  • The same position

If you don’t stretch, then the same sitting or lying position might be the reason for your cramps. Don’t forget to change your position after a while to avoid these cramps. And women who wear high heel are also vulnerable due to the enormous strain on their legs.

  • Don’t stretch when you are exercising

You should never forget that the most important thing before and after exercising is to stretch. If you want to avoid these painful spasms, you should always stretch your muscles.

How to prevent charley horse

  • Shower with some warm water

If your muscles are stiff or sore you should take a warm shower and you will definitely relax them. In this way, you will prevent muscle cramps.

  • Drink pickle juice

This is an old but very effective remedy. A study has shown that pickle juice relieves the muscle pain and prevents muscle cramps better than water. This is as a result of the salt it contains and it definitely works.

  • Eat bananas

  • Muscle cramps might be as a result of lack of potassium and as we already know the banana is rich in potassium. So, if you want to avoid muscle cramps next time eat a banana.
