White Spots on Tonsils: Should You Panic?



The most common cause of white spots on tonsils is an infection. Your doctor should very easily identify the issue and diagnose its cause. Usually there is no reason for panic but here are some of the reason for white spots on the tonsils.

Tonsil stones

They are usually deposits of dead cells, mucus, bacteria or food particles. Other symptoms of this condition are ear aches and bad breath. There is no need for treatment for this condition.

Tonsillitis

This is an inflammation of the tonsils and it is the most common cause for white spots on the tonsils. It is usually accompanied by difficulty swallowing and fever. Your doctor will probably prescribe you some antibiotics.

Strep throat/ Pharyngitis

Strep throat is as a result of bacterial infection and accompanying symptoms are difficulty swallowing, nausea, chills, fever, and a sore throat. Pharyngitis is a viral infection and there is no need for antibiotics.

Oral thrush

It is a fungal infection, when some fungus like candida albicans rise. Except on your tonsils you will also notice white spots on your cheeks.

Mono

Mononucleosis or kissing disease is a viral infection. The symptoms are fever, tiredness, headache, and throat pain.

STDs

Some sexually transmitted diseases like HIV, herpes, chlamydia or gonorrhea cause white spots on tonsils. Accompanying symptoms are mouth sores, pain, swollen gums, swollen lymph nodes, fever etc.

Smoking

One more reason for white spots on tonsils is smoking. Smoking even increases the chances for leukoplakia and oral cancer but a doctor should determine the reason for the white spots.

Syphilis

This is another STD which cause patches in the mouth, weight loss, rashes on your arms and legs, fever, tiredness, swollen lymph nodes etc. A common treatment is penicillin injection.

Diphtheria

Respiratory infections like diphtheria can also cause white spots on tonsils. Other symptoms include difficulty breathing, swallowing, and fever. Children are vaccinated at an early age.

Oral herpes

It usually appears on the lips but it can also appear on your tonsils and you will experience flu-like symptoms like fever and sore throat.

Treatment

  • Avoid alcohol and smoking
  • Avoid spicy foods
  • Gargle with some salt water
  • Rest plenty
  • Drink warm and a lot of fluids
